A Lesson on Being Alive – Elizabeth Tesler

We are of the age

When our mothers start dying

And our fathers start lying–

When our hearts are pits

In constant need of filling

(Just like our stomachs, they say)–

When all the world’s a canvas

That only we can paint,

Yet we cannot seem to start–

When “stupid” sounds like “smart”.

And they wonder what they did wrong

To form a living, honest soul.
